How to 3D Print a Mashrabiya Shadow Lamp (Settings & Finishing Tips)

The mashrabiya shadow lamp is one of the most rewarding Islamic-geometry prints: a lattice shell that throws intricate patterns across the room when it is lit. Here is how to print one that looks its best.

1. Pick the right file

Start with a design made for shadow play — a fine, open lattice. Our Mashrabiya Lattice Table Lamp and the smaller Mashrabiya Tealight Holder are both designed for crisp shadows.

2. Filament & colour

Warm white, cream or amber PLA/PETG gives the cosiest glow. Darker walls create sharper shadow contrast; lighter walls glow more softly.

3. Print settings

  • Layer height: 0.16–0.20 mm for clean lattice edges.
  • Walls: 2–3 perimeters so the pattern stays sharp and light passes only through the openings.
  • Infill: low (10–15%) — the geometry does the work.
  • Supports: usually none for a vertical lattice; check overhangs first.

4. Lighting — do it safely

Use an LED bulb or a flameless LED tealight. LEDs stay cool and are safe with printed plastic; avoid real flames and hot incandescent bulbs.

5. Finishing

A light sanding of the base and a matte clear coat lift the look. Pair it with a calligraphy wall panel for a complete corner.
